Card from Freetown Christiania - Denmark

Picture 001

Hi ! I just received a very interesting Postcard sent by Abhimnayu  Pandey of Shimla  from the famous Freetown Christiania, Denmark . This is a very controversial independent  town of Denmark, located within Copenhagen and  one of Denmark’s most popular tourist attractions .This card is   a very good example of Modern Postal History with the stamps and postmarks from Christiania and Copenhagen.

Freetown Christiania (Danish: Fristaden Christiania) is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Christiania has its  own Post office and postage stamps which is evident from this Picture Postcard that bears a postage stamp of Christiania as well as red marking of date and “ Christiania Posthus” These stamps are valid for use within Christiania. But on the outgoing mail from Christiania, Dainsh Postage stamps are to be affixed. This card bears both the markings from Christiania and Copenhagen. This is a very special card   with the postally used stamp from Christiania. The stamp  depicts the flag of Christiania. Such local stamps create a postal history  when these are actually used on a cover or card for a valid postal purpose. Many thanks to Abhimanyu for this wonderful card !!  It’s very very special for me !! …..

The freetown Christiania was founded in 1971 by a group of hippies who developed their own set of rules, completely independent of the Danish government.

Entrance to Christiania

Christiania is  one of the greatest tourist attractions in Copenhagen, and abroad it is a well-known "brand" for the progressive and liberated Danish lifestyle. Many Danish businesses and organizations also use Christiania as a show place for their foreign friends and guests. The purpose is to show something Danish that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Christiania, also known as Freetown Christiania (Danish: Fristaden Christiania) is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares (85 acres) in the borough of Christianshavn in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Civic authorities in Copenhagen regard Christiania as a large commune, but the area has a unique status in that it is regulated by a special law, the Christiania Law of 1989 which transfers parts of the supervision of the area from the municipality of Copenhagen to the state. It was closed by residents in April 2011, whilst discussions continue with the Danish government as to its future, but is now open again.

Christiania has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971. Its cannabis trade was tolerated by authorities until 2004. Since then, measures for normalising the legal status of the community have led to conflicts, and negotiations are ongoing.Among many Christiania residents, the community is known as staden ('the town'), short for fristaden ('the freetown').

The Postal System

Christiania has its own Postal system  and postage stamps which are valid within Christiania.

Currency

Although the Danish Krone is accepted on the streets of Christiania, the official currency is the Løn, which are minted each year. Locals are paid in Løns, and the coins can be used throughout the town. The Løn has been issued since 1997; previously Christianites used a currency called the Fed and, in one year, the Klump. Hemp tokens, also known as "Nemos", which could be exchanged for cannabis, were also in circulation

The flag

Flag of Christiania

The flag of Christiania is a red banner with three yellow discs representing the dots in the "i"s in "Christiania".The colours were supposedly chosen because when the original squatters took over the former military base, they reportedly found a large amount of red and yellow paint.

Stamps on summer flowers by Danish Post

The red poppy

Date of issue: 8 June 2011

Danish Post issued a set of four stamps featuring four beautiful summer flowers on 8 June 2011. Stamps show red poppy, cranesbill, Masterwort and Siberian poppy.

Summer Flowers

The red poppy is easily recognised by its scarlet petals, which are loosely attached and fall off easily. Once the leaves have been shed, all that remains is the distinctive, egg-shaped capsule. It contains up to 20,000 seeds, which are spread over a large area when the wind shakes the dry plants.
The optimum germination conditions for the seeds are close to the surface of the soil, so autumn ploughing often brings large numbers of them to the surface after they have been lying dormant for years. The next year, the entire landscape is coloured bright red with a lovely carpet of poppies.

Cranesbill

The cranesbill, or geranium, is a herbaceous perennial often cultivated in Danish gardens and common in the wild. This popular plant is easy to look after and, to the delight of many gardeners, it attracts butterflies. Cranesbill takes its name from the shape of its pointed fruit. The fruit is in five sections and gathered in a long beak that splits into five flaps that curve upward in an explosive movement and eject the seeds.

Masterwort

Masterwort is a charming and slender perennial, and not particularly well known. With its beautiful umbel of star-shaped flowers, this decorative plant looks great in herbaceous borders or as a border plant. Masterwort belongs to the umbelliferae family, and has both edible and poisonous cousins. The benevolent side of the family includes dill and celery, while the malevolent side includes deadly, poisonous plants like cowbane and hemlock, as well as the allergenic giant hogweed.

Siberian poppy

The Siberian poppy is a popular and hardy ornamental plant well suited to herbaceous borders, rockeries and pots. As the name suggests, this species of poppy originates from Siberia. Curiously, it is also known as the Icelandic poppy – which is something of a mystery, as it does not grow in Iceland.

New Europa 2011 stamps..

vat

Date of Issue : 21 June 2011

The  new Europa 2011 issue from Vatican City consists of two stamps presented as a diptych showing a detail of a Sistine Chapel painting by Perugino, The Journey of Moses into Egypt.

The United Nations declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. Forests cover more than 30% of the earth's surface and represent a vital source of biological diversity. They also play a key role in mitigating the effects of climate change, a concern widely discussed today. Forests are of great importance in regulating the earth's climate, and they play a key role in the water cycle and oxygenation of the planet. Forests provide wood and fuel, they host an enormous variety of living animal and plant species, and they counter soil erosion. Given their vitally important role for the planet, it is necessary to safeguard and protect them.

The biological, ecological and climatic role of forests is invaluable for the life on Earth. The loss of forests means the loss of biological diversity and climate change.

The clearing of forests and a non-simultaneous afforestation have been hurt earlier cultures. But mankind has apparently not learned much from it: the reckless deforestation in tropical rain forest, the rigorous cases of cutting down of ancient trees without quick replacement have already led to noticeable changes in the flora, fauna and climate. That is why afforestation is one of the biggest global challenges.

Teddy

The good-natured Teddy lives in a secret den in a secret forest, where he goes on adventures with his adult friends Aske, Luna and Viola. His best friend is Chicken, who is younger but sometimes smarter than Teddy. His youngest friend, Duckling, does not understand very much and so can be a bit trying.

Bruno

Bruno the Bear made his television debut in 2005 as the door opener for the advent-calendar serial “Teddy’s Christmas Journey”. He is an old, badly worn bear, filled with hay and straw. Instead of a right paw, he has a claw, which is sometimes replaced with a pizza-slicer or a flamethrower. Bruno usually sees himself as the centre of the universe. He speaks with slight Jutland accent and, as seen on the stamp, he loves French fries.

Discussion

Critical Analysis of the cover : The 3 elements of the above cover are not co-related. The stamp is on Energy conservation, cover illustration shows Rhododendron and the cancellation shows “letter writing campaign”. Not a good item for thematic collection . All the three elements must have relation with each other.
