World Tourism Day..
World Tourism Day – 27 September 2010
Today is World Tourism Day. It is a thematic event held every year on September 27. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political, and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make in reaching these goals. Here I show some most beautiful stamps related with Tourism….
World Tourism day recognizes the importance and the tourism industry across the globe. As the world comes together to celebrate 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, The World Tourism Day (WTD) celebrations are being hosted officially this year by China, under the theme, "Tourism and Biodiversity" (September 27, Guangdong Province). The theme provides a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity to tourism and the role of sustainable tourism in the conservation of life on Earth.
Tourism & Biodiversity
“Tourism and biodiversity are mutually dependent. UNWTO wishes to raise awareness and calls upon the tourism stakeholders and travelers themselves to contribute their part of the global responsibility to safeguard the intricate web of unique species and ecosystems that make up our planet,” said UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai.
Biodiversity is a key tourism asset and fundamental to its sustained growth. Intact and healthy ecosystems form the cornerstone of thousands of tourist enterprises and products worldwide, attracting hundreds of millions of tourists each year.
A global online photo competition was held last month by UNWTO to raise awareness of the World Tourism Day theme. UNWTO invited all to participate with photos that capture the strong link between tourism and biodiversity showing how tourism not only depends on healthy ecosystems, but can also contribute to them.
From the Vault: Glenn Beck Illustration
CLOWES: I was asked by the NYT to draw Glenn Beck for the cover of the Sunday magazine - apparently, he wasn't going to sit down for a photo-shoot with the Times and so they had to hire an illustrator for their big profile. I had been longing to draw his blubbery face for some time and happily agreed. I turned in the illustration on a Monday and was told that Beck had in fact agreed to come in and sit for a photo over the weekend, so they couldn't use my illustration. Thanks for telling me. The B&W photo they used was perhaps a bit more complimentary to Mr. Beck, so I'd say he made a good call.

Butterfly on French Stamp…
Date of Issue - 6 September 2010
In shades of various colors, butterflies are dainty creatures that have provided many poets and writers, inspiration for the most magnificent verses. Many have marveled at the transformation of the very modest caterpillar into a magnificent butterfly! One such species are the Blue Morpho butterflies.
The French Post has issued a stamp depicting a Blue Morpho butterfly on September 6, 2010.The butterfly is considered a symbol of grace and lightness. A Morpho butterfly may be one of over 80 species of the genus Morpho. They are Neotropical butterflies found mostly in South America as well as Mexico and Central America. The name Morpho, meaning changed or modified, is also an epithet of Aphrodite and Venus. Many Morpho butterflies are colored in metallic, shimmering shades of blue and green. These colors are not a result of pigmentation but are an example of iridescence. Morphos range in wingspan from the 7.5 cm M. rhodopteron to the imposing 20 cm.
To a Butterfly
I've watched you now a full half-hour;
Self-poised upon that yellow flower
And, little Butterfly! Indeed
I know not if you sleep or feed.
More motionless! And then
What joy awaits you, when the breeze
Hath found you out among the trees,
And calls you forth again!

another four color pen creation
Anyway, for this drawing, I used my Dong-A 4 color pen again. I'm starting to just love the convenience of having four colors in one pen right in my hand whenever I need it. I got myself two other similar pens today. Although the other two were generic (it has Spongebob and Tigger as a design!) I think they work quite well.
I'll make sure to post the finished version of this once it's done.
The picture kind of makes it look weird. It looks much nicer in my sketchbook. =( |
2010 - International Year of Biodiversity
Iceland – 16 September 2010
International Year of Biodiversity
The United Nations have proclaimed 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. The International Year of Biodiversity is meant to help raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and encourage self sustainable development and community protection against disasters caused by lack of water, the spread of diseases, crop failure and loss of livestock. Almost all ecosystems on earth have been disrupted by human beings. One fourth of the world‘s fishing stocks are being overfished resulting in closure of fishing grounds with serious social and economic consequences. Changes in the use of land result in decreased precipitation causing desert formation and water shortages. Various new and more powerful methods must be applied in all spheres of human endeavour if the loss of biodiversity is to be halted and a more equitable exploitation of resources achieved.
