Nikolai Pirogov - Great Surgeon…

 

 

Recently, The Russian Post has issued a stamp marking 200 years since the birth of Nikolai Pirogov, the eminent figure of the Russian medicine.

Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov (25 November 1810 - 5 December 1881) was a prominent Russian scientist and doctor, He is considered to be the founder of field surgery, and was one of the first surgeons in Europe to use ether as an anesthetic. He was the first surgeon to use anesthesia in a field operation (1847), invented various kinds of surgical operations, and developed his own technique of using plaster casts to treat fractured bones. His name is one of the most widely recognized in Russian medical history, and he is considered a Russian national hero.

The 1st State level philatelic exhibition HIMPEX – 2010 which was earlier proposed to be held at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Shimla from 10 - 12 December 2010 has been postponed. The new dates will be declared later.

The world-renowned Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) has unveiled a rare work of artistry – a gold coin bearing a Taj Mahal engraving – at their Manhattan showroom. The limited edition gold coin weighs one kilo and is priced at Rs. 65 lakh. Each coin, which is minted in .999 pure gold and measures 37mm in diameter, is the world's first coin to include 68 hand-set Cartier diamonds. Hi ! Here  are some nice stamps and postmarks issued on Taj Mahal, the Pride of India. Surniame issued a stamp on Taj in 1997. Cuba issued a set featuring seven modern wonders of the world on 16 August 2007. The First day Cancellation depicts Taj Mahal. Nicaragua issued a set of 3 stamps on famous women of the world in 1996. World Tourism Day – 27 September 2010

 

Today is World Tourism Day. It is a thematic event held every year on September 27. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political, and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make in reaching these goals. World Tourism day recognizes the importance and the tourism industry across the globe.As the world comes together to celebrate 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, The World Tourism Day (WTD) celebrations are being hosted officially this year by China,  under the theme, "Tourism and Biodiversity" (September 27, Guangdong Province). The theme provides a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity to tourism and the role of sustainable tourism in the conservation of life on Earth.

“Tourism and biodiversity are mutually dependent. UNWTO wishes to raise awareness and calls upon the tourism stakeholders and travelers themselves to contribute their part of the global responsibility to safeguard the intricate web of unique species and ecosystems that make up our planet,” said UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai.

Biodiversity is a key tourism asset and fundamental to its sustained growth. Intact and healthy ecosystems form the cornerstone of thousands of tourist enterprises and products worldwide, attracting hundreds of millions of tourists each year.

 

A  global online photo competition was held last month by UNWTO to raise awareness of the World Tourism Day theme. UNWTO invited all to participate with photos that capture the strong link between tourism and biodiversity showing how tourism not only depends on healthy ecosystems, but can also contribute to them.
