New Stamps from Canada….

mh

Date of Issue : 6 September 2011

Here are some new stamps from Canada Post   mental health, scientific innovations and  hydroplane. Canada Post has been issuing  a stamp on mental health for the last 3 years to create awareness about it. The souvenir sheet of mental health stamp shown above has been designed to convey the message  of care and awareness about this disease.

The 2011 Mental Health stamp is the fourth annual semi-postal issued in support of the Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health. Collectively, stamps issued in the past three years have raised close to a million dollars, via a dollar from the sale of every booklet of ten stamps going to the Foundation.

“The Puzzle,” the winning entry in Canada Post’s Deliver Hope design competition, conveys a compelling message on the latest Mental Health semi-postal issue.

Designer of the stamp, Miriane Majeau of Terrebonne, Quebec, got involved because she wanted to create awareness of mental illness and the way it has touched the lives of those closest to her. Her entry, “The Puzzle,” resonated not only with the judges—mental health professionals and stamp design experts—who selected it as a finalist, it also touched a chord with the Canadian public, who gave it the winning share of the more than 286,000 online votes.

 Canadian Innovations

Date of Issue : 17 August 2011

This stamp issue shines a spotlight on the “Made in Canada” leaps of science and creativity that have changed lives at home and abroad.

Cardiac Pacemaker

In 1950, while studying hypothermia, Dr. John Hopps developed the world’s first cardiac pacemaker, which brought hope to those suffering with heart disease. In his experiments using radio frequency heating to restore body temperature, he learned that if a heart stopped beating due to cooling, it could be started again by mechanical or electric artificial stimulation. The first version of the now common medical device was external, far too large to be placed inside the human body. Improvements and miniaturization finally allowed for an unobtrusive version that could be surgically implanted.

Smart Phone - Black Berry

While smart phones and other communications devices, as well as technologies such as push email and mobile apps, are commonplace now, they were nearly the stuff of science fiction in 1999, when Research in Motion (RIM) founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie introduced the now iconic BlackBerry®. Their invention freed information workers from their desks and changed the way the world communicates. Subsequent versions and continuous innovation have kept RIM and its BlackBerry device a front runner in the massive smart phone market.

Electric Oven

Canadian cooks can thank inventor Thomas Ahearn for making their lives much easier. In 1892, he invented the first electric oven. The original model was made of brick, 2 metres (six feet) wide by 2 metres (six feet) high and, according to the press at the time, hot enough to “roast an ox.”

Electric wheelchair

One of Canada’s most prolific inventors, George J. Klein, created an electric wheelchair that offered mobility to quadriplegics and changed lives for the better. Dr. Klein’s list of inventions also includes the microsurgical staple gun and internationally significant innovations in aviation and space technologies.

Miss Superfast III

Date of Issue : 8 August 2011

This issue celebrates the triumph of Miss Supertest III—the legendary Canadian hydroplane that made history by capturing the International Harmsworth Trophy three years in a row.

Fifty years ago, on August 7, 1961, tens of thousands of excited spectators stood on the banks of Lake Ontario at Long Reach, near Picton, Ontario, and held their collective breath as Canadian hydroplane Miss Supertest III made history by capturing the International Harmsworth Trophy for a third time in a row. Her story is almost mythic in that it combines both triumph and tragedy, and is still told again and again by those who were there to witness her historic win.

Date of Issue : 8 June 2011

Fiji Post issued a set of four stamps on 8 June 2011 in global  response to HIV AIDS Prevention. Fiji is made up of about 332 islands covering some 650,000 square kilometres of ocean. From 1874 to 1970, Fiji was a British colony. The population totals some 700,000 people.Fiji is classified as a low HIV prevalence country; however the number of new HIV infections is increasing.

Protect youth from HIV and Zero new infections (20c stamp, 40c stamp)

In Fiji HIV is mostly transmitted through unprotected sex, and there is a potential high risk of infection among young people. In 2010 more than half of all new infections, 23 of 33, were in young people aged 10-29. The high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections especially among young people, potentially increases the risk of HIV infection. It is therefore essential that young people are empowered to protect themselves from HIV infection.

image

Prevent mothers and babies from HIV (65c stamp)

In 2010 there were 33 new reported cases of which 12 were pregnant women, but there were no babies born HIV positive in 2010. Government has ensured the prevention of parent to child transmission as one of its main focus areas in the national response to HIV. The awareness of the availability and benefits of voluntary counselling and testing for pregnant mothers resulted in the increase of testing in the ante-natal clinics from 46% in 2006 to 67% in 2010.

Zero discrimination ($5 stamp)

HIV related stigma and discrimination continues to hamper the AIDS response. This year the Fiji Government enacted the HIV Decree. When enacted to its capacity the Decree safeguards the privacy and rights of people living with or affected by HIV, including confidentiality of personal information.

New Stamps from UN Postal Administration..

UNPA

Date of Issue : 1 July 2011

On 1 July 2011, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued a set of six commemorative stamps with the theme "ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) - Education".

The stamp designs are based on six internationally agreed "Education for All" goals which aim to meet the learning needs of all children and adults by 2015.

Education is a fundamental human right and essential for the exercise of all other human rights. It promotes individual freedom and empowerment and yields important development benefits. Education is a powerful tool by which economically and socially marginalized adults and children can lift themselves out of poverty and participate fully as citizens. Yet millions of children and adults remain deprived of educational opportunities, many as a result of poverty.

Clown Care – best way to treat patients

image

Date of Issue : 27 June 2011

Hi ! Israel Post issued a wonderful stamp featuring Clown Care on 27 June 2011. Clown care is a way of treating patients by humor, games and clowning as well as giving them required medicines in order to cheer patients' spirits and enable them to get well soon. It is the best way to treat patients and make them to smile and forget their illness ….it would be really nice if it is used in every child’s hospital. This is all for today…Till Next Post..Have a Nice Time !

Clown care..

The image of a clown entertaining a sick child in hospital that appears on this stamp has become the symbol of clown care in Israel and around the world.

In the 1970's Dr. Patch Adams, considered to be the founder of clown care, was determined to change doctors' patronizing attitude toward their patients and to get them to see those patients as people, not just as cases. Patch Adams claimed that combined treatment of both the body and the spirit is the best way to defeat disease. He utilized a lot of humor, games and clowning in order to improve patients' spirits. The highly successful 1998 film 'Patch Adams', starring Robin Williams, portrayed his work.

A number of years after Patch Adams began his mission, real clowns from the Big Apple Circus began visiting children's wards in New York hospitals. Adams' message spread quickly and today medical clowns operate in most countries around the world, working in conjunction with medical teams.

Clown care came to Israel in 2000, with Shlomi Algosi considered to be the first Israeli medical clown.

Global campaign

The philatelic initiative is part of the global HIV-campaign launched in 2009 by the Universal Postal Union, UNAIDS, the International Labour Organization and UNI Global. The campaign relies on the global postal network’s vast outreach to draw attention to the importance of HIV prevention.
More than 23,000 post offices around the world have carried out awareness campaigns using posters, postcards, a
website
and public events to inform people about HIV. The campaigns have potentially reached millions of people. In Cameroon alone, the Post estimates that campaign materials are viewed daily by 36,000 people.
This is the first time that Posts worldwide have made a concerted effort to draw attention to AIDS, but philately has been raising awareness about the disease for years. A quick survey of the
UPU’s World Numbering System reveals that more than 60 different AIDS themed stamps have been issued since 2002, when the database was created.

World Health Day – 7 April

World Health Day 2011

Urgent action necessary to safeguard drug treatments

Drug resistance is becoming more severe and many infections are no longer easily cured, leading to prolonged and expensive treatment and greater risk of death, warns the WHO on World Health Day. Under the theme "Combat Drug Resistance", WHO calls for urgent and concerted action by governments, health professionals, industry and civil society and patients to slow down the spread of drug resistance, limit its impact today and preserve medical advances for future generations.

image

WHO has launched a worldwide campaign to safeguard medicines for future generations. Antimicrobial resistance and its global spread threaten the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today to treat the sick, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers.

Antimicrobial resistance is not a new problem but one that is becoming more dangerous; urgent and consolidated efforts are needed to avoid regressing to the pre-antibiotic era.

For World Health Day 2011, WHO is introducing a six-point policy package to combat the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The policy steps recommended by WHO include:

  • develop and implement a comprehensive, financed national plan
  • strengthen surveillance and laboratory capacity
  • ensure uninterrupted access to essential medicines of assured quality
  • regulate and promote rational use of medicines
  • enhance infection prevention and control
  • foster innovation and research and development for new tools.

The discovery and use of antimicrobial drugs to treat diseases such as leprosy, tuberculosis, gonorrhea and syphilis changed the course of medical and human history. Now, those discoveries and the generations of drugs that followed them are at risk, as high levels of drug resistance threaten their effectiveness.

Drug resistance is a natural biological phenomenon, through which microorganisms acquire resistance to the drugs meant to kill them. With each new generation, the microorganism carrying the resistant gene becomes ever more dominant until the drug is completely ineffective. Inappropriate use of infection-fighting drugs (underuse, overuse or misuse) causes resistance to emerge faster.

Sahara’s elusive stamp of approval

Dipankar De Sarkar, Hindustan Times
London, April 06, 2011

India’s Sahara Group threw a glittering reception in London on Tuesday to showcase British stamps that it said had been issued by Royal Mail to honour group chairman Subrata Roy. But Royal Mail clarified Wednesday the stamps were ‘limited edition business customised sheets’ — items that can be bought off the Internet.

The event was held at the Grosvenor House and was also designed to announce Sahara’s plans to make London its headquarters for global business and generate employment in Britain.

The letter of invitation said, “A postal stamp is being issued in his (Roy’s) name by the Royal Mail of the United Kingdom.”

But Royal Mail said in a statement on Wednesday the stamps were the product of “a range of services which allow individuals or businesses to create a personalised label, which can feature their own image or logo next to a postage stamp.

These stamps, where your face appears alongside standard-issue stamps, can be customised and bought from the Royal Mail website by anyone for as little as just under £15 for a batch of 20. They are not sold by post offices but can be used to send letters and other mail.”

Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation,Bahamas

Hi ! Here  is a a set of stamps from Bahamas, issued to highlight Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation. There is a need of such foundations in every country which can help patients suffering from different types of heart diseases and the patients are not able to pay the high expenditure of heart surgery. This  special set  of stamps inspires many organizations and individuals to come forward and create such foundation that can help many needy people !! Such Voluntary organizations are indeed a great help  to the society in a country like India where a large mass of population is unable to meet the high cost  of  hospital services for heart diseases. This is all for today….Till Next Post….Have a Nice Time !!

A foundation that cares heart patients

The Bahamas Postal Service on February 11 issued a set of commemorative stamps to highlight the 50th anniversary of the Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation.

The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation has helped thousands of children in The Bahamas who suffer from heart disease. It has provided clinics to identify heart problems in children and when needed, the Foundation has paid for the heart surgeries that have meant a full life for many.

The Foundation was created after Sir Victor Sassoon Bart GBE died from heart complications in l961. His widow, Lady Sassoon requested that in lieu of flowers, donations were to be made to the local heart associations in his memory. After finding out from the Princess Margaret Hospital that such associations did not exist in The Bahamas, Lady Sassoon took it upon herself to create one. In addition to paying for life saving surgeries for children, the Foundation has purchased diagnostic machines and items to promote heart care for the hospital. The Sassoon Heart Foundation is an all-volunteer organisation.

As a part of fundraising efforts, the Foundation hosts the annual Heart Ball. The ball has been held every February for the past 47 years.

Sir Victor was born to a family of merchants and bankers who lived in India and England. In the l920s, Victor Sassoon moved to Shanghai, China, where he established most of his own business enterprises. War broke out in the late l930s and he was forced to flee, traveling throughout the world. After the war, Sir Victor re-established his business empire in The Bahamas, England and South America. He also dedicated himself to his passion for horse racing. He was very successful at this endeavour and his horses won the English Derby four times in eight years. He married the former Evelyn Barnes (Lady Sassoon) in l959.
