An Post (Ireland)  released a set of five stamps on 5 August 2011 to celebrate renewable energy technologies.The stamps feature the five main sources of renewable energy  wind, wave, hydropower, solar and bio fuel.

Renewable Energy

The term 'renewable energy' describes a wide range of naturally occurring energy sources, all of which can be replenished. The stamps illustrate five specific types of renewable energy technologies; wind, hydro, solar, wave and biofuel.

Wind generated electricity has made huge strides in recent years; its capacity currently is close to 1,500 MW, mainly from about 90 on shore wind farms.

Hydro energy is energy that is taken from water and converted to electricity. The most common method of using energy from water is a hydroelectric dam, where water coming down through an area causes turbines to rotate and the energy is captured to run a generator.

Although Ireland has a reputation for rain, there's enough sunshine for substantial use of solar power, using solar panels to capture sunlight and turn it into electricity. A growing number of households are now using solar panels on the roofs of their houses to generate much of their electricity.

Waves and tides along the Irish coast offer enormous possibilities; the sea is a limitless and reliable source of power. It is predicted that Ireland could install 30,000 MW of wave energy conversion facilities by 2030.

Biomass is biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. In the context of biomass for energy this is often used to mean plant based material, but biomass can equally apply to both animal and vegetable derived material. Biofuel is the term for biomass that has been converted into liquid fuel.

The use of these energy sources reduces  greenhouse gas emissions and diversifies  energy supply.

New Stamp Collectors Club forms at Fair Park

CROSSVILLE — Today, stamp collecting is still one of the world's most popular indoor hobbies. It is estimated that about 25 million people in the United States collect stamps; while worldwide it is closer to 200 million.

Thousands of stamp (philatelic) clubs and organizations enjoy sharing their rare stamps and their history. Everyone specializes in some country with a worldwide collection being enormous, running into thousands of volumes, and incredibly expensive to acquire. The use of the internet has made it much easier to collect, trade, swap, sale, share and auction their stamps.

Currently there does not seem to be a club in this area, until now! Ray Kusmierski has enjoyed being a member of six different stamp clubs in the past 60 years of collecting.  He thinks one of the most rewarding parts of stamp collecting, is making new contacts. He corresponds with people from around the world making many interesting new friends, who also share his love for stamps. Every senior interested in sharing stamp stories is welcome to join the stamp club. The first meeting of the Fair Park Senior Center Stamp Club will be Wednesday Sept. 7 at noon.

Vías Verdes - Greenways

Hi ! Here is a beautiful stamp issued by Spanish Post on a very innovative  eco friendly project  “ Green ways ”. The project is unique in its own way which is related with converting old disused railway lines to attractive tourist spots. A wonderful idea  jointly utilized by Spanish Railway Foundation with the collaboration of the Ministry for the Environment creating  several  tourist spots all over the country where these lines are left unused since a long time. This innovative method can be used by other countries and of course in India too to make discarded railway lines into a beautiful place worth to use and see. VÍAS VERDES

Vías Verdes (greenways) are old disused railway lines that have been recovered and reconditioned for use by walkers, cyclists and ecotourism purposes. Currently there are over 80 routes spread across the country, with kilometric distances that vary depending on the layout, and new sections are still being set up.

The Vías Verdes project was initiated in 1993 aiming at turning more than 7,000 kilometres of rail lines in disuse into a space for leisure and outdoor sports. So far, more than 1,800 kilometres have been opened for the use and enjoyment of walkers, cyclists and people with disabilities. One of the main characteristics of these routes is the easy accessibility to the public, given that they are flat paths that can be used by all types of sportspeople.

In a clear commitment to sustainable development and the revitalization of rural areas, tourism is being promoted in each area of different routes and restoration works in old railway stations are being carried out turn them into restaurants, museums, accommodation areas and rental of bikes and horses. All routes are marked with old wooden railway sleepers and the specific organization logo.

The Vías Verdes programme is coordinated by the Spanish Railway Foundation with the collaboration of the Ministry for the Environment (Ministerio de Medio Ambiente Rural y Marino) and the regional and local authorities.

This Spanish programme has been extended in other European countries and in 1998, in Namur (Belgium), the European Greenways Association was established with the aim to promote and inform about anything related to the creation of Greenways on a European level, with members of 60 organisations from 14 countries.

The stamp depicts two walkers by a disused railway line and the Vías Verdes logo.

Children’s world on new Finnish stamps

Date of Issue : 5 May 2011

Finnish Post issued a beautiful set of stamps on 9 May 2011 featuring Children theme. The stamps are unique and are in the form of round shape. Finnish Spring and Summer is depicted in these five roundish stamps. Light colours and sweet motifs - for a collector, whose theme is love, nature, summer, even birds! Earlier Finnish Post has also issued stamps of unique shape and designs. A set of Postcards has also been issued with these stamps.

Feel the touch of summer : On this FDC - blue for clear summer sky,white birches, singing birds in the bushes and the stamp sheet in all its light colours.

World Environment Day..

 

 

World Environment Day (WED) is observed on June 5 every year to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity, the need to identify problems related to the environment and ways to take corrective action. It was on this day in the year 1972 that the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was formed. First celebrated in 1973, World Environment Day, also popularly known as Environment Day, is a means to tackle environmental challenges that include climate change, global warming, disasters and conflicts, harmful substances, environmental governance, ecosystem management and resource efficiency.

Each year, World Environment Day is hosted in a different city with a different theme for one week that kicks off on June 5. A World Environment Day theme is selected along with an Environment Day slogan, which aims to emphasize the importance of protecting our planet and promote an understanding that they each individually can play a significant and effective role in tackling environmental issues.

This year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has selected India as host of World Environment Day 2011. The Environment Day 2011 slogan is ‘Forest: Nature at your service’. Forests cover 1/3 of the earth’s land mass and play a key role in our battle against climate change, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere while storing carbon dioxide – this is what the theme aims to reinforce.

Exclusive stamp exhibition in Stedtlingen, Germany

“ THE WORLD OF ANIMALS IN PHILATELY”

From July 2^nd to July 3^rd a philatelic exhibition will be held with the title “ THE WORLD OF ANIMALS IN PHILATELY” in the community Rhönblick, local district Stedtlingen, Germany. The exhibition is organized by the Stamp Collector Group BSV MEININGEN in cooperation with the topical collector group ARGE ZOOLOGIE from Germany. Two pictorial postmarks will be available during the exhibition. One of the postmarks featuring a local ORCHID and the other one the SUNDEW.

22 May is celebrated as International Day for Biological Diversity .2011 is the International Year of Forests and forest biodiversity is the theme for this year's International Day of Biodiversity (IDB). Designation of IDB 2011 on the theme of forests provides Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and everyone interested in forests, the opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and increase practical action.

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity.

The U.S. Postal Service has unveiled a new postage stamp to raise money to protect endangered species, including tigers, rhinos and marine turtles. The stamp features an Amur tiger cub and is the result of a 10-year effort led by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other international conservation organizations.

The Save Vanishing Species stamp will go on sale in September for a premium above the normal first-class rate and will be available for purchase at all U.S. post offices. All proceeds raised will go to benefit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Multinational Species Conservation Funds, which support efforts by numerous conservation organizations, including WWF, to protect wild populations of tigers, rhinos, elephants, great apes and marine turtles. The new stamp marks the fourth semipostal issued by the U.S. Postal Service.

Renewable energy sources such as water, solar and wind power together form more or less an inexhaustible source of energy, which technically would be able to meet the energy needs of the entire world. These three sources are found in every country on the planet, albeit to varying degrees.
Since the oil crises of the 1970s interest in non-fossil energy sources has increased. In recent years additional incentives have emerged primarily due to rising concerns about not only climate changes but also problems in accessing oil and gas.

Renewable energy sources are currently only used for a small portion of the world's energy consumption, however efforts are being made across the world to develop and improve access to renewable energy. For example, EU's representatives have agreed that one-fifth of total EU energy demand in ten years should be powered by renewable energy, compared to less than ten percent today.In addition to improving the environment and guaranteeing supply, 'green energy' can also contribute to economic growth.

Permanent Pictorial Postmark – 8 - Corridor, Rameswaram Temple

Date of Inauguration of PPP - March 07, 1978

Rameswaram is a town in Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, and is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge, opened for traffic in 1914. It is India's first sea bridge and is still functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge. Together with Kashi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimages. Hence, it is a bustling pilgrim center. The pictorial postmark shows a section of the famous third corridor (outer set of corridors) of the Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram, and is reputed to be longest in the world, with total length of 3850 feet. There are about 1200 pillars in the outer corridor. Their height is about 30 feet from the floor to the center of the roof.

India Post has issued postage stamp for Pamban Bridge in 2007 and postage stamp for Rameswaram Temple on 2001. Rameswaram Temple is also depicted on British India stamp issued on 1935.

The design was selected in a competition organized for Junior School children. The stamp represents the design of the contest winner with logo on the stamp “ Stop Pollution ”.

This postmark is available at Trichy Philatelic Bureau. Rock Fort or Ucchi Pillayar koil, is a combination of two famous 7th century Hindu temples, one dedicated to Lord Ganesh and the other dedicated to Lord Shiva, located a top of a huge rock in Trichy, India. Geologically the 83m high rock is said to be one of the oldest in the world, dating over 3 billion years ago. The name rock fort comes from the fact that the place was used for military fortification first by the Vijayanagar emperors and later by the British during the Carnatic wars. The temple is now maintained by the Archaeological Department of India.
