Gold medal stamps at 2012 Olympics by Royal Mail

With one year to go to London 2012, Royal Mail has announced that it will issue special gold medal stamps to celebrate Team GB Olympic gold medal wins.This is the first time that Royal Mail will be issuing  stamps to mark Olympic victories.   The stamps will feature both individual and team gold medal wins.

Details of the actual designs themselves are set to be announced later, when Royal Mail will also announce its plans to commemorate the Paralympic Games.

Royal Mail issued its first Olympic Games Stamps in 1948, with four stamps bearing the five Olympic Rings.

It will be the third time a host nation has issued stamps to mark individual Olympic gold medal wins.  Australia Post was the first postal service to issue gold medal stamps to mark home team Olympic victories in 2000, with Hellenic Post in Greece following suit in 2004. In 2008 China Post issued a single commemorate sheet of stamps to mark their national team’s success in Beijing.  More recently Canada Post issued a stamp to mark the first ever gold medal won on home territory at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010.

The 27^th July sees the issue of the final set of ten stamps in Royal Mail’s countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The three-part series has seen 30 stamps issued, reflecting all sports competed.

Royal Mail has a history of celebrating key moments in UK sporting history.  England’s World Cup football victory in 1966 was the first UK sporting achievement to be marked by a set of Special Stamps with more recent stamp issues featuring the England rugby team’s 2003 historic World Cup win and the English cricket team’s 2005 memorable Ashes success.

Royal Mail issues final set of Olympic & Paralympics Games…

Royal Mail issued  the third and final set of Olympic & Paralympic Games stamps illustrating the whole gamut of Olympic sports on  27 July 2011.

 

The release of the 10-stamp set has been timed to take place exactly one year before the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games.The whole 30-stamp series, each of which has been designed by a different artist. Like the previous two sets, this one is printed in litho by Cartor in two sheets, each comprising se-tenant strips of five different designs.All designs feature the official London 2012 logo.

The stamps feature depictions of classic Olympic sports such as field athletics and gymnastics as well as more recent additions to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, including triathlon, handball and wheelchair rugby.

The stamps are the third and final set to be issued during a three-year Games countdown, with the total of 30 representing the largest Royal Mail commission since the Millennium series in 1999 and 2000.

The creation of 30 stamps marks the fact that 2012 will be the start of the 30th Olympiad.

It also represents every one of the 29 sports in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the exception of athletics, which will be featured across two stamps as "Athletics: track" and "Athletics: field".

Royal Mail’s largest stamp commission since the Millennium series will be completed on 27 July 2011, with the launch of the final set of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games stamps – issued exactly one year before the opening ceremony.

To mark the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and its role as an official licensee of the Games, Royal Mail commissioned 30 UK artists and image makers to take part in this three-year project. The 30 stamps created to mark the 30^th Olympiad and London 2012 Paralympic Games each champion an Olympic or Paralympic sport. They have been issued in three sets of ten stamps to mark the annual countdown in July 2009, 2010 and finally 2011.

The third and final set in this exciting series, subtitled ‘Get Ready for 2012’, contains a new set of ten dynamic sporting images printed in two sheets, each bearing se-tenant strips of five 1^st Class stamps. These include established Olympic sports such as fencing, handball and wrestling, and more recent additions including sailing, triathlon and wheelchair rugby.All stamps in the series feature either the London 2012 Olympic Games or Paralympic Games logo.
