Date of Issue : 28 July 2011

Kangaroo and Lyrebird
The kangaroo and the lyrebird originally featured in stamps marking the 1888 centenary of New South Wales, the first adhesive commemorative stamp issue to be released worldwide. The kangaroo, flanked by the Sydney flannel flower, was in a one shilling (1/-) brown design; the lyrebird, bordered with waratahs and honeysuckle, was in an eight pence (8d) magenta design. The other Australian colony to feature a kangaroo was South Australia, using it in a blue two-and-a-half (2½d) stamp design released in 1894.

Black Swan and Southern Cross
The Black Swan has a strong place in Western Australia's philatelic heritage. It remained the central motif of the colony's stamps from its first issue, in 1854, until stamp production was transferred to the Commonwealth in 1902. The Southern Cross featured on many Australian colonial stamps, the first of which was the five shilling (5s) New South Wales medallion stamp of 1861. This resonant symbol of the south also appeared in the designs of one Western Australian stamp, six Victorian stamps and four New South Wales designs, including stamp duty and charity designs.

Like the first in the series, this issue comprises stamps in double-definitive size, on paper featuring a simulated watermark.

Falkland Islands : Wildlife

image

Date of Issue : 30 May 2011

The Falkland Islands Post  issued  a set of 4 WWF Southern sea lion stamps.

Sea lions are resident in the Falklands . Numbers have declined dramatically since the 1930's when the Falklands held a large proportion of the world's population of Southern sea lion.

The Southern sea lion (Otaria flavescens) is perhaps the archetypal sea lion in appearance. Males have a very large head with a well developed lion-like mane, making them the most lionesque of the eared seals.  Females are smaller and lighter in colour, varying from buff to light grey-brown. Pups are born black or dark brown before moulting to a more chocolate colour. All sea lions look very dark when wet.

Southern sea lions frequently feed in kelp beds and often at night. They sometimes prey on penguins, but their main food is octopus, squid, lobster krill and fish caught reasonably close to the shore.

Stamps on Marine Biodiversity…

Date of Issue : 12 May 2011

On 12 May 2011, Phil Post issued a new set of definitive stamps dedicated to the marine biodiversity of the Philippine coast. The stamps illustrate a banded vexillum, a mushroom coral, a cowfish and a pink tube sponge.

Banded Vexillum (Vexillum taeniatum) is a species of small sea snail, marine gastropod mollusk with ribbed miters. The shell size varies between 38 mm and 85 mm.

Marine

Mushroom Corals (Fungia scutaria) are colonies of individual flattened polyps related to anemones. Color can range widely from green, red, blue, purple or gray. Their surface texture may be smooth or fuzzy looking.

Marine

Cowfish (Lactoria cornuta) is recognizable by its long horns that protrude from the front of its head, rather like those of a cow or bull. Adult fish live around sand or rubble bottom up to a depth of 50 m. They are omnivorous, feeding upon benthic algae, various microorganisms, sponges, worms from sand flats, mollusks, small crustaceans, and small fishes.

Marine

Pink Tube Sponges (Cribrochalina olemda) are animals of the phylum Porifera. Their bodies consist of jelly-like mesohyl sandwiched between two thin layers of cells. Sponges do not have nervous, digestive or circulatory systems. Instead, most rely on maintaining a constant water flow through their bodies to obtain food and oxygen and to remove wastes, and the shapes of their bodies are adapted to maximize the efficiency of the water flow.

Mylapore

Mylapore

Mylapore is a cultural hub and a bustling neighborhood, in the southern part of Chennai (formerly Madras) city. It is a major commercial center and one of the oldest residential parts of the city. It is remembered well for the famous 7th century Kapaleeswarar Temple, a shrine of Lord Shiva.
The postmark depicts a peacock and branches of Punnai tree (Dilo Oil Tree). Legend says that Goddess Parvati in the form of a mayil (Tamil word for peacock) is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva, hence the name Mylapore. In Hinduism, Agamas state three essential requirements for a place of pilgrimage - Sthala, Teertham and Murthy. Sthala refers to the temple; Teertham, to the temple tank; and Murthy to the deities worshipped. A temple may also be associated with a tree, called the Sthala Vriksham. Punnai Tree is the Sthala Vriksham of the Kapaleeswarar Temple.

Beyond the Coast…

Date of Issue : 4 May 2011

New Zealand’s varied marine animals are brilliantly portrayed in this vibrant stamp issue: Beyond the Coast. The beautiful artwork was inspired by the Poor Knights Islands, which lie 23 kilometers off New Zealand’s Tutukaka coast in the upper North Island. A total marine reserve and nature reserve, these 11-million-year-old islands are rich with incredible marine life.
The following species can be found on this vibrant stamp sheet (from top to bottom):

Royal albatross, humpback whale, white-faced storm petrel, john dory, yellowfin tuna, kingfish, hammerhead shark, hapuku, demoiselle, pink maomao, snapper, arrow squid, Lord Howe coralfish, sandager’s wrasse, orange roughy, king crab and yellow moray eel.

New Zealand’s 15,000 kilometers of coastline are home to magnificent coves, bays, harbors, sounds and fiords. However, beyond this irregular coastline lies a roughly 4.3 million square kilometer exclusive economic zone that hosts an array of unique marine life. More than 15,000 species are known to live there, of which many are migratory. New Zealand's isolation means that a large number of these species are unique to this island nation, and scientists believe that many more have yet to be found.
