India Post Issued  on 13th February a set of 6 postage stamps and a Miniature Sheet on legendary heroines of India during INDIPEX 2011.

Stamps on Legendary heroines released in a glittering  function

Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Gurudas Kamat released a set of six stamps on six legendary actresses of Indian Cinema here last evening.
These legendary heroines of Indian cinema are Kanan Devi, Devika Rani, Savitri, Meena Kumari, Leela Naidu and Nutan.
Two legendary heroines of yesteryears Asha Parekh and Vaijayantimala Bali graced the occasion and remembered the actresses and work culture of those days.
Tajdar Amrohi, the family member of Meena Kumari and family members of Savithri were also present on the occasion.
Kamat also released a coffee table book 'Pigeon to Post' by Steve Borgia on Indian postal history on this occasion.
Devika Rani was the star and late manager of Bombay Talkies, from where she dominated the first decade of the Indian sound film and set the standard for the post 1950 Hindi film heroine.
Daughter of Col. Choudhury, surgeon of Madras, and grandniece of Tagore, she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Royal Academy of Music (London) and also held a degree in architecture and was a successful designer of Paisley textiles. She married Himanshu Rai in 1929.
Her first film produced by Rai and directed by Osten, was as costume designer (and probably as extra) for "Prapanch Pash"(1929). In Germany where the film was edited, Rani was able to see Fritzlang, G.W.Pabst and Sternberg at work and assisted Marlene DIetrich on the set of 'Deblau Engel' (1930).
Kanan Devi, actress and singer, started with the name Kananbala. Debuting as a child actress in Joydev, she worked under contract with Radha Films where she acted in Jyotish Bannerjee Films. P.C. Barua was unable to obtain her for his role of Paro in 'Devdas' (1935) but she played the lead in his next film, Mukti, which made her a star and launched her long association with New Theatres.
Meena Kumari was born in Bombay, one of the daughters of the Parsee theatre actor, singer and music teacher Ali Bux and dancer Iqbal Begum, Having hit upon hard time and living near the Rooptara Studios, Ali Bux sought to get his three daughters into films.
Her main persona was constructed through movies like Kamal Amrohi's 'Daera', Bimal Roy's 'Yahudi' and Guru Dutt's 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam', culminating in her most famous film, 'Pakeezah'.
She married Amrohi, who directed some of her best work. The couple eventually completed the film they jointly conceived, 'Pakeezah', in 1971 just before her death.
Nutan, top Hindi 60s star was introduced to films by her mother, Shobhana Samarth, in Hamari Beti. Her screen image was moulded by Bimal Roy (Sujata, Bandini) and by those who continued in the Roy tradition: Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Anari), Bimal Dutt (Kasturi) and Sudhendu Roy (Saudagar).
Savithri Telugu- Tamil actress and director, was born in Chirravuru, Guntur District, AP into a wealthy family. She learnt music and dance under Sista Purnayya Sastry and gave some public performances as a child in Vijayawada.
Leela Naidu was an actress who starred in small number of Hindi and English films, including 'The Householder', Merchant Ivory Productions' first film.
Selected Femina Miss India in 1954, she was featured in the Vogue along with Maharani Gayatri Devi in the list of 'world's Ten Most Beautiful Women and is remembered for her classical beauty and subtle acting style.(ANI)

Today is Valentine’s Day, celebrated all over the world as Lovers’ day. Taiwan is issuing today a set of two stamps for this special occasion. Young people in Taiwan  widely celebrate western Valentine’s Day .

The design of the stamp features a heart formed by a row of perforations, as well as images of roses, presents, hearts, and the word “LOVE” created from pixels. Through the interaction between the sender and the receiver, these stamps convey love and heighten the romantic atmosphere of Valentine’s Day. The message of the code is “Happy Valentine’s Day” for the NT$5 stamp and “I Love You” for the NT$25 stamp.

Love may be a universal theme, but the first U.S. stamp to commemorate this basic human emotion didn’t appear until January 1973. The design was based on the iconic LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana (born 1928), today one of the most well-known works in the pop art movement. The artist had played with the design for a number of years and in a variety of formats. He first used the concept in 1958 for a series of poems that employed the iconography of a stacked LO and VE. When Indiana was commissioned to design a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in New York he made three paintings of the word LOVE in red, blue and green. First printed in 1965, it remains the most popular card ever published by the Museum.

The first LOVE sculpture was carved from a single block of unpolished aluminum in 1966. Over the years numerous editions of the sculpture have been created, including versions in red and blue, blue and green, and red, white and blue. International language editions can be found in Italian and Hebrew. The image has appeared on t-shirts, mugs, posters, paperweights, and many other collectibles.

Although the first LOVE stamp was enormously popular, it would be eight years before the LOVE theme was repeated. Finally, following numerous requests, in 1982 the USPS released a floral tribute with the word “LOVE” spelled out in a variety of flowers.Two years later, a third LOVE stamp was issued, this one showing five repetitions of the word “LOVE” with a different colored heart replacing the “V” in each. Like the 1982 release, the 1984 LOVE stamp was considered a special rather than a commemorative; that is, it was available in larger quantities and for a longer period of time than a commemorative. According to USPS press releases, the new LOVE stamp was intended for use “not just for Valentine’s Day but for special occasions throughout the year, such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and letters to loved ones.” A generic LOVE stamp appeared in 1985 and 1986. Picking up a color scheme begun with the 1984 issue — and would continue pretty consistently for the next ten years — the 1985 stamp one that featured bold slashes of primary and secondary colors above a purple “LOVE,” red “USA,” and green “22.” The 1986 stamp featured a whimsical cartoon puppy with a hopeful expression.

The 1984 through 1986 issues coincided with the phasing out and retirement of “Mr. ZIP,” the ambassador of the Postal Service’s ZIP Code system since 1964. The American public found the “friendly little salesman in blue” enormously appealing, with his theme song of “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah” (sung by Ethel Merman). He appeared on several stamps himself, as well as on post office collectibles and the selvedge of various stamps, including the 1984, 1985, and 1986 LOVE stamps. Mr. ZIP was officially retired in 1986.

Love 2011 stamps from Australia

Australia Post issued a set of two  stamps for this year’s Valentine’s Day with beautiful stamp booklets on 18 January for this special occasion.

The celebration of St Valentine's Day on 14 February is a time when lovers send flowers and Valentine cards to express affection.

The Valentine's Day tradition of giving red roses is believed to date from the 18th century, when the French monarch King Louis XVI gave red roses to his Queen, Marie Antoinette, as a symbol of his love. During the 19th century, ribbon, paper lace and cut-outs of flowers, doves and cupids were used in the designs of handmade and manufactured cards.

There are two very distinct designs in this issue: the lasting beauty of red roses and a more contemporary design using hearts and vine leaves in a pattern of love.

New Valentine’s Day stamps from Thailand…

Thailand Post has issued two postage stamps on 7 February to welcome Valentine's Day. They feature images that serve as a "Symbol of Love". This year's Thailand stamps are different from those of previous years, which presented a variety of colorful roses. The images on the stamps of this year come from the participating of postage stamp lovers' votes.

The Road that Connects History

Charoen krung Road or the New Road, starting from Sanamchai Road and reaching the Chao Phraya River at Tok Road, is the first road to have built with Westen technology. It passes through the area of Phra Nakhon, Sumphanthawong, Pomprab Satruphai, Bang Rak, Sathorn and Bang Kholaem District. Its historical value is linked with the architectural structures that lie along the road and the road has been part of the development of Bangkok and its city planning for more 140 years. When Bangkok changed the means of communication from water to the land, Charoen krung Road played a significant role in the transition.

The Eight Chinese Deities

Li Tieguai, the Deity of Medicine and Medical Treatment, is a young, intelligent and robust man. He is a vegetarian, follows religious precepts and leads an austere life.
Han Zhongli, the Deity of Fortune, is plump and of huge stature, with a board forehead, long thick eyebrows and a large nose.
Lu Dongbin, is the Deity of Industry, Trade and Business, Intellectual People and Poets. He has a high crown, long ear-lobes, long eyebrows and elongated eyes like those of a swan. His left eyebrow is marked with a black mould. His face features a large, round nose, chubby cheeks, a wide mouth and long, slender neck. This eight-foot-two-inch-Deity is clever and has very good memory.
Zhang Guo Lao, is the Deity of stability, Long Life and Good Health. The Zhang Guo Lao legend has it that a white bat lived on the sunlight and the moonlight for over a thousand years until it was made into the deity. He can transform himself into an aged man and he has a white donkey as his vehicle.
Lan Caihe, is the Deity of Flowers and Abundance. According to legend, this Deity was given a miraculous fruit that enabled him to maintain his youthful looks and complexion forever. There is nothing to show whether this Deity is male or female, but, in Taoism, he is to be taken a male.
He Xiangu, is the Deity of Virtues, Loyalty and Gratitude. He is knowledgeable, articulate and his words are endowed with reason. He is graceful and tender in his manner. He loves to help the deprived with his magical powers and he is able to give solid predictions.
Han Xiang Zi, is the Deity of Fortune-Telling. He is regarded as a prophet and a music lover. Having a special interest in people who had magical power he took lessons in magic and practised penance with Lu Dongbin.
Cao Guojiu, is the Deity of Statusand Prestige, Royal Deities, Employees and Loyalty. He was a member of the royal family and was blessed with a great fortune, yet he decided to sacrifice his luxurious and easy life for meditation.

VALENTINE'S MAKING NIGHT at Spellman Museum
Spellman Museum, Weston, Massachusetts  will be open Friday, February 11, until 8:30 for children and adults to make Valentine cards, envelopes, pins and small gifts decorated with US Love stamps.  Children admitted free. There will be a small charge for certain gifts.  The museum staff will help visitors create stamp Valentine pins, Valentine envelopes decorated with "love" stamps, and cut out hearts covered with stamps for their loved ones.The museum will also have a display of U.S. "love" stamps issued over the years.

Special Stamps for Valentine’s Day from Finland…

The Finnish Post will released the first new stamps of 2011 which  includes a miniature sheet of five Valentine’s day postage stamps named “Ystävyyden oksalla” (Branches of friendship).

A miniature sheet entitled “Branches of Friendship” is also released  to celebrate Valentine’s Day – known as Friendship Day in Finland. The stamps, illustrated by Janne Harju, show happy bird-like characters in their colorful nests. The open-minded design of the five form-cut stamps in the miniature sheet stands out from traditional stamps. The width of the largest stamp in the miniature sheet is over 11 cm.

New portraits for Churchill stamp – Smilers on Churchill

Two new portraits of Winston Churchill by Buckinghamshire artist Daniel Rogers feature on a postage stamp issue from Bletchley Park’s secret post office. The portraits that portray Churchill as a young man and a wartime leader recently featured on the cover of the Churchill Centre’s magazine “Finest Hour”. 

The stamps are being issued as two limited edition sheets each of 20 1^st class stamps . They will be released at “Stampex” the London Stamp Fair, 23-26^th February where Rogers will be in attendance to sign them.

The Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost) has issued a set of two  Valentine’s Day 2011 stamps,  on January 14, 2011. It is classified as a “Special” kind of issue  with a denomination of P 7.00 and quantity of 70,000 pieces.

Designs : The two designs show Pheepoy, the Philpost Mascot, delivering examples of non-traditional postal products like a box of chocolates and a bunch of flowers. For several years now, Philpost offers special delivery service every Valentine’s Day dubbed, “The Postman also delivers Flowers.” With many hearts surrounding the world, the designs emphasize the “caring ways” your local letter-carrier exemplifies, every time a gift item is handed to the special recipient, on a special day like Valentine’s Day.

A dream has come true for stamp collectors around the world as it is now possible to buy at face value and on a single site (www.wopa-stamps.com) the new issues and all available stamp products from a variety of postal administrations, including Aland, The Faeroe Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey (with Alderney), Jersey and Isle of Man.
